Corn The Three Sisters intercrop of corn, pole bean and squash produces more total food per unit of land than the same crops grown separately. Research-backed Supported by measured land-equivalent ratios. Zhang et al. (2014, Annals of Botany) found LERs for maize/bean/squash polyculture were greater than 1 in all but one of the nutrient-level and season combinations tested, and the three-species mix outperformed maize/bean by 15.5-17.8% in 2007, attributed to complementary rooting depths. Important limit: the advantage is in TOTAL land productivity, not in any one crop - individual squash and bean yields in polyculture are often lower than in monoculture, so a gardener growing squash for maximum squash should not expect a gain.
Pole Bean Pole beans climb the corn and fix nitrogen while squash vines shade out weeds below - the third element of the Three Sisters. Research-backed Same land-equivalent-ratio evidence as above: the three-way polyculture beat monocultures on a land basis. But in that study bean biomass in polyculture was the same as or LESS than in monoculture, so the bean is the component that gives ground. The system pays off in total productivity per area, not per species.
Borage Borage brings in the bees that squash flowers absolutely depend on. Traditional The dependence is real and documented - UF/IFAS states all varieties of squash and pumpkin are highly dependent on insect pollination, without which yields are low to nonexistent, and five squash-bee visits gave significantly bigger fruit than one. But the same publication warns that supplemental flowers blooming during crop bloom compete for those pollinators, and no trial of borage beside squash was found. Best practice from the evidence is floral resources timed around, not during, squash bloom.

Percentage-reduction figures for marigold against cucumber beetles circulating online could not be traced to any real study.
Nasturtium Nasturtium works as a trap crop for squash bugs and aphids around winter squash. Traditional Plausible and popular, but we could find no peer-reviewed or extension trial that actually tested nasturtium against squash bug or cucumber beetle - the confident percentages online come from gardening blogs. The nearest real data point is discouraging: the SARE-funded Oklahoma State study of companion plants (white yarrow and feverfew) against squash bug found effects inconsistent, plot-to-plot variation high, mostly not statistically significant, and concluded companion planting is 'not recommended to commercial producers.' Use the tested Blue Hubbard perimeter instead if you want a trap crop that works.
Radish Radishes interplanted with squash repel squash vine borer and cucumber beetles. Traditional Among the most-repeated garden claims and, as far as we can verify, never tested in a replicated field trial. The 'University of Nebraska study' cited across the web is a 2017 undergraduate Environmental Studies thesis whose own abstract describes it as a review of organic control methods rather than an experiment, and the widely-quoted 'Cornell research showing 65% reduction in vine borer egg-laying' does not appear in any Cornell publication we could locate - Cornell's own squash vine borer IPM fact sheet says nothing about radish. Graded traditional, not myth, because nobody has run the test that would disprove it.
Buckwheat A flowering buckwheat border feeds parasitoids and predators that then control squash bugs in the crop. Not supported Tested directly and not supported. Cornelius, Vinyard & Gates (2019, Insects 10:318) ran a two-year field study with a 3 m flowering buckwheat border around squash fields and concluded 'flowering buckwheat did not increase parasitism rates of squash bugs in squash fields' - no significant effect on egg parasitism (about 12% either way) or adult parasitism, despite pollinators visiting the buckwheat heavily.
